Metaphor & Simile

Rhetoric and power is an ocean. It is very powerful and can turn the tide in any situation, no matter what.

Rhetoric and power is like a lion. It is controlled by the most powerful people and sways the peoples' opinions.

Antony is like dictator, he is very powerful with his words, but it is not always in the best way.

Rhetoric and Power Quote and Analysis

Act 3, Scene II
Mark Antony's Speech at Caesar's Burial

Paraphrase of Quote:

Antony:
"Now you cry and you feel pity for Caesar.
These tears are good and gracious.
Now you just see his cloak with his blood and wounds,
How will you feel now if you see his dead body?
Look here, at Caesar, wounded and killed by the traitors.
(Antony lifts up Caesars' cloak)
Good and nice friends, don't let me cause chaos among you."

ALL Plebians:
"Let's get revenge! Go after the traitors! Seek and burn them! Kill all of them!"

Antony
"The people who murdered Caesar are honorable.
I don't know what grudges they had against Caesar that made them do it.
They are wise and honorable people so will give a reason for it.
I have not come to steal your loyalty."

Analysis:

This quote had a very large impact on many aspects of the play. The biggest impact was that it gave the triumvirate and Antony a lot of people to follow and fight for their cause. This speech turned the tide of the situation on the conspirators because now instead of the people following them, they follow Antony. This speech also contributes to the war that is about to happen between the triumvirate and the conspirators. Antony's speech helped to gain the loyalty of the people to see the wrong of Caesar's death and turn against the conspirators. This whole quote was very impactful on who has and maintains power and the play and also reveals an interesting trait about Antony. He is very modest, but mostly does this to gain the favor of the people. This speech made the people want to fight for Antony and his cause to go to war with the traitors

This quote definitely signifies the topic of Rhetoric and Power. Antony's words are very powerful and he uses his impactful word choice and modest attitude to gain the favor of the people. He uses his power that he already has to get people to listen and his rhetoric is very prominent throughout the speech. He questions the people and gives gives graphical descriptions of Caesar's brutal murder and those who killed him. He gets the people to believe what he is saying and eventually with his words gets them to follow them to conspire against the traitors. His Rhetoric and Power is used very well overall throughout the quote.
